Heródoto Barbeiro opens Lab Journalism 2050® interview series

An icon of Brazilian journalism talks about the profession’s challenges and prospects in a project that debates the future of media.

In an interview for the Lab Journalism 2050® project, journalist Heródoto Barbeiro answers the question: “what is journalism?” The live broadcast (in Portuguese) aired on the channel of the production company Outras Terras Filmes last Friday (the 3rd). He was interviewed by me, Sgarbe. The ten questions and answers are also cut in this playlist.

Heródoto was a professor of Brazilian history for more than two decades before becoming a brilliant mind of journalism. He was one of the founders of Brazil’s first all-news radio station, CBN. He also hosted, among other programs, the interview show Roda Viva, on TV Cultura.

A fan’s note

Heródoto’s voice sounds familiar to me, and probably to most readers of this story. The lasting, serene admiration I have for him comes of age this year. In 2005, I listened to him daily on the national newscast while we prepared CBN’s state newscast. Even today, he says he does ten interviews a day. That is to say. Interviewing him is like celebrating Mass for the pope.

Heródoto’s spirit reminds me of Luiz Geraldo Mazza, longtime political commentator at local CBN. Mazza said, about technology, that he had little, that more people ought to be doing lives of events. Both seem, in a Victorian and heroic way, undisturbed by the progress of the platforms.
