Being intelligent does not forbid us from praying a little

Reflection addresses a balanced relationship between faith and reason, proposing a healthy spirituality beyond institutions.

In the philosophy topics class we were talking about the scientist who leaves the laboratory and stops by Mass before heading home. And I think of the respectful way we treat this subject. Freud was also respectful enough to write about religion.

Although our dear Viennese psychoanalyst looked at the relation of religion to man as a “universal neurosis,” there are, to me, countless signs that he did not lay hands on the Spirit more than he could or should.

Being intelligent, rationalizing what is worth rationalizing, does not forbid or contradict living the faith. Not least because, and we all know it, God is here and there, outside time, doing his work, which is not small.

One thing is ethnic religion, the human impasse before the other who may know what we do not know, have what we do not have, one thing is the “church sign.” Another, absurdly different thing is a life with God. “For this the Son of God appeared.”

I also bring the terrible news that eternity has already begun, and that we will have to work things out detail by detail until we are in the Glory of this earthly experience. Sooner or later, my brothers, we will be in an entirely different project. And still together with one another.
