Sgarbe to Ualid; Letter three

Brief, peculiar letter by Sgarbe reflects on guilt, happiness and an unusual encounter with a “Curitiba cannibal.”

My most recent fear is being sentenced to a happiness greater than that of my siblings. Ironically, I feel guilt. And Catholic guilt does not dissipate in a hundred years. Besides, I think I no longer have a hundred years, because I abused medication in adolescence, and my liver health, ah, what a joke.

In the same hours that I receive your news arriving from Paris, in Curitiba I meet a man who wants to eat human flesh. I have been, my friend, all these years, prepared to read such an anthropophagic thing in sixteenth-century literature. But now, like this, a cannibal from Portão (a Curitiba neighborhood), I don’t know.

Whenever I remember you and Cassiana I feel religious — In a good way.

See you later.
